Cursed Blue Bird

I’m not really a fan of Twitter. It’s a fad that will fade soon enough. Just like ICQ, friendster, myspace, and facebook.

However, I did join up because I got the feeling that although it’s a fad, I’m missing out on stuff. Arenanet has taken to twitter with a passion, other fans and blogs seem to love it, and it’s a fair enough way to talk about nerd stuff with fellow nerds.

I guess I’m glad I joined up because at PAX Arenanet has gone nuts with the tweeting from the convention. I’m going to copy paste a lot of their tweets, just to show whats what. I’ll also include a few tweets from people who were there or otherwise tweeted. Apologies to Izzie in particular if she didn’t want to be included.

PAX Day Two is about to begin! We're doing a ticket-only Dynamic Events panel, which I'll be tweeting on @guildwars2~DC

izziebot
seated at the panel! starting soon. front row! http://twitpic.com/2l7vev

izziebot
tengu wall! tengo will be in the game!

izziebot
gw2 panel: we're designing a dynamic event that will make it to the final game!

guildwars2
Colin Johanson, Eric Flannum, and Jeff Grubb have kicked off the panel. Attendees will be able to create an event that appears in GW2! ~DC

guildwars2
Eric’s delivering overview of history and concept of dynamic events. “The #1 thing about events is immediacy.” ~DC

guildwars2
Eric’s using an example of an event chain in GW2 w/ harpies infesting a watering hole, and impact that has on the world around it ~DC

izziebot
ogres are beast masters.

guildwars2
Eric: It’s crucial to design dynamic events so that players want to succeed, and that other players are allies, not rivals.

izziebot
Golem suits are karma rewards

guildwars2
In the panel, Eric describes more cool stuff: Those golem battlesuits can be earned as a reward for completing an event.I want one. ~DC

guildwars2
Eric clarifies:”Events are not permanent, but they have a persistent effect. It stays that way until someone comes along to change it.” ~DC

guildwars2
Permanent consequences take place in the character’s personal storyline, however. ~D

guildwars2
What kind of event will we design? Jeff Grubb takes us through potential locations to choose from. Maybe the charr Flame Legion zone? ~DC

guildwars2
Timberline Falls is the setting for our event, featuring quaggan, an aquatic race who “get beat up a lot” says Jeff, but can “hulk out.” ~DC

guildwars2
Other stuff in our event zone – a huge monolith that grawl worship as a god which is actually the work of a crafty asura in “Oz” mode ~DC

guildwars2
Colin explains some other events we’ve created for this zone, like an underwater krait city, Order of Whispers spies, and more… ~DC

guildwars2
Eric notes that sometimes races in the game will be your opponents, sometimes your allies. It’s not always black and white… ~DC

guildwars2
We’ll be designing an event in an underwater section with hylek, quaggan, and krait. ~DC

guildwars2
The vast majority of people want to design a quaggan event. YAY! They’re agreeable toad people, but “never make one angry” says Jeff. ~DC

guildwars2
Man, I work at ArenaNet but I am constantly blown away by how intricate and well thought out the GW2 event chains are… ~DC

izziebot
gw2 discourages completionism in events system

Brinstar
I find it hilarious that I am reading the @guildwars2 live tweet of the panel whilst standing guard outside. 😛

izziebot
colin writes our dynamic event ideas down http://twitpic.com/2l8fdp

guildwars2
We’re kicking around ideas for events in a krait vs quaggan undersea conflict. Really interesting ideas from attendees. ~DC

izziebot
jeff and eric listen to audience suggestions for events http://twitpic.com/2l8g67

guildwars2
Some concept titles: Sylvari Raiders, Recruit Quaggan Allies, and Epic Shark Battle of DOOM! ~DC

guildwars2
Krait are slavers who build undersea towers that rise out of the water, where they store air-breathing slaves. Surrounded by sharks! ~DC

izziebot
the list grows! http://twitpic.com/2l8hx7

guildwars2
Eric’s focusing on common ideas from the brainstorming session, such as undersea boss battles and luring others to attack the krait. ~DC

KTR_Ravious
@guildwars2 How are quaggan different from hylek?

guildwars2
We’re going to focus on creating a chain of events on attacking the malicious krait, foes of the adorable quaggan ~DC

guildwars2
A diagram! Event design is very non-linear – the big boss battle is supported by other events that smaller groups can play. ~DC

guildwars2
@KTR_Ravious Quaggan are happy, chubby little undersea toad people who “hulk out” when angry… and then feel bad about it later. ~DC

guildwars2
Eric: “As designers, when we need a super-weapon, we get our artists involved to determine what the super-weapon looks like.” ~DC

KTR_Ravious
@guildwars2 That sounds like the best fantasy race description ever! Can’t wait to see them in game. 🙂

guildwars2
Kicking around more cool ideas. What about a super-armored quaggan? “Iron Quaggan!” Jeff Grubb says.

guildwars2
Event ideas include arming/training the quaggan, escort missions, rebuilding a hylek village destroyed by krait… Lots of cool ideas. ~DC

guildwars2
Eric wraps up a productive, collaborative session – “You can look forward to playing this event chain in the game.” So cool. ~DC

izziebot
eric; “we’re at the point where everything in the game is designed. but not everything is implemented to our liking”

So yeah that was their Dynamic Event panel. Plenty of interesting tidbits to read there. Quaggan to me just sound, I don’t know, they’re hylek. Let’s be real. They’re underwater Hylek. Oh and I hate all the people that got to participate in this. Die.

  1. Yeah, my thoughts were somewhere more along the lines of goddamn, I wish I could be in Seattle right now. It’s probably cooler than Cali.

Also, I’d be commenting on your blog more, Hunter, but I kinda borked my laptop, so I’m using my dad’s old one…which sucks.

Also sidenote: Didn’t you say you wanted to to Urgoz more or something? I can teach you all you need to know about it, if you want. IGN Gizmo Harris. Just thought I’d offer.

    • Yeah it really does seem like a good time.

I resolved my urgoz issues actually, he’s been added to my hall. gw seems to be moving into a less active phase generally.

  2. I think that was my main motivation for getting a twitter account too. Normally I’m pretty leery of these so-called social networking tools, but it seems like these days you hear most of everything from people tweeting first.

    • i’m extremly leery. I have my name on facebook. literally nothing else. I wanted to see something one time.

I kept missing gw2 or anet tweeting stuff and reading about it later. Plus you and every other blogger i read tweet regularly so, there i am.

  3. As someone who only got on Facebook to get addresses for wedding invitations, I will never surrender to Twitter! Never!

    • Obi-Wan once thought as you do. You don’t know the *power* of the Dark Side, I *must* obey my master.

  4. Nope doesn’t bother me. I can wait till someone makes an awsome video of it for me to watch over and over as I wish and wait for my next awsome game that I’ll pay $80 to play for 5 years…
I don’t need to thrash threw heaps of crap; especially if someones going to summarise it for me!
    Thanks. Die stupid blue bird.

    • your welcome?

I think you dislike twitter more than i do.
