Guild Wars 2 seems to be retiring a lot of the rewards that came with season one of their living world story. They call it The Final Countdown. Someone correct me if my interpretation is wrong.
This last chance to earn these rare rewards from battling to the top of Scarlet’s airship and facing her holo-defenses is only available until March 18!
Colour me disappointed. This last “opportunity” to obtain some of the rare rewards just underlines the imbalance of poor rewards throughout the game. Instead of putting away perfectly good items, they should be handing them out on a regular basis. I just don’t think the game is in a position where it should be retiring rewards.
This has been one of the major problems since launch. Things have changed for good and bad but I still feel like there is a lot of imbalance and a lot of work to do. I’ve never been a fan of ultra rare rewards (I don’t think a situation should arise where if you want something you have to pay 500 to 1000 gold) and there have regularly been items like this such as the Molten Jetpack or Monocle. Or how about the azurite orb, a unique stat set that was obtainable only for a short time, and now costs over 5 gold per orb. I really dislike that these situations are created at all, and that will only get worse with retiring some of these rewards.
And what do we get for our play time instead, what do we always get as a reward? Blues and greens.
We all complain about blues and greens, so I hesitate to even count them as rewards. They are by far the least impressive rewards the game has to offer but no matter which activity you participate in it is by far what you are most likely to get.
And as for the final “opportunity” to get some of living story rewards, why is everything so rare? If this is the last chance why aren’t we going out with a bang? Spread the wealth. Why are we creating a giant suckhole of outrageous prices on rare items on the Auction House by permanently retiring sought after items? Hand out the rewards already. This is their big close-out of Living World Season One, they should have celebrated with better drop rates.
Arenanet now have all the rewards in the world to hand out, a flourishing selection of skins, minis, items and otherwise, and choose to not only make them incredibly rare, but to retire them.
I remember Arenanet championing the philosophy that their devs shouldn’t put months of work into content that would be played once and then never seen again, and yet somehow that doesn’t apply to getting rewards into the hands of players.
